This isn’t a job that can be done with hand tools in a driveway. EV battery packs typically weigh from 500 to over 1,000 pounds — a Tesla pack sits on the heavier end — so removing the old battery and positioning the replacement requires a forklift and a battery lift table, along with EV-rated scan tools to safely de-energize, reconfigure, and verify the system. We’re equipped and trained for this work.
Two realistic sources exist today: a used pack from a salvage yard, or a new pack from the dealer. A handful of companies refurbish packs, but most require your vehicle to be shipped to their own facility, which isn’t practical for most customers. For that reason, a used salvage battery is our primary option — it offers significant savings over a new dealer pack. We prefer to source the battery ourselves, because compatibility, physical condition, mileage, storage time, shipping, warranty terms, and pre-sale testing all have to be weighed, and we know what to look for.
A used high-voltage battery is a salvage part with a history we can’t fully verify. We don’t know its exact cycle count, whether it was ever run hot, how long it sat discharged, or how it was affected by whatever sent the donor vehicle to the salvage yard. Latent problems — cell imbalance, gradual capacity loss, coolant seepage, or BMS faults — can surface weeks or months after installation, well outside any practical shop warranty.
The only warranty that exists on the part is whatever the salvage seller offers, and we can’t extend coverage beyond that. If a used pack fails after installation, the realistic costs fall on the customer: return freight, the seller’s restocking fee, and a second round of labor to pull and replace the pack again — plus or minus the difference in battery cost if the original seller can’t provide a warranty replacement and a new pack has to be sourced elsewhere. We’ve seen third-party “refurbished with warranty” packs fail within six months and the warranty holder initially refuse the claim — which is exactly why we’re direct about this up front. Choosing a used battery is a real savings, but it carries real risk, and we’d rather you understand that before you commit than be surprised afterward.
Yes. We bench-test every used battery before it goes into your vehicle, so we’re not wasting your money or our labor installing a pack that’s already bad. We can read several key data points that give us a solid read on the battery’s condition. One honest limitation: state-of-health (SOH) figures aren’t reliable when a pack arrives at or near zero charge, which used batteries often do. At low charge, SOH readings are inaccurate — so we can confirm a battery is functional, but we can’t certify an exact SOH percentage in that state.
We’ll consider a customer-supplied battery on a case-by-case basis. Because sourcing, condition, and compatibility carry so much of the risk, we generally prefer to source the pack ourselves — but we’re open to discussing it.
Before we order a battery, we require a non-refundable deposit sized to the specific job. Sourcing an HV pack means committing real money to freight and to the seller before the part ever reaches us. The deposit confirms you’re committed to the repair and covers our exposure: if a customer backs out after the battery ships, the deposit goes toward return freight and the seller’s restocking fee rather than coming out of our pocket.
There are two separate clocks. First is sourcing — finding a battery that fits your vehicle and your budget can take anywhere from about 7 days to 30 days or more, depending on what’s available on the used market. Second is the repair itself — once the battery arrives, the physical replacement typically takes 1 to 3 days.
It depends on your vehicle’s make, model, and battery capacity (kWh). As a general range, a used battery replacement typically runs $6,000 to $10,000, and a new battery from the dealer typically runs $12,000 to $20,000. We’ll give you a specific quote once we know your vehicle and confirm what’s available.
On occasion, the supplier requires the old pack back as a core — but most of the time, disposing of the old battery is left to us. Contrary to what many people assume, a failed EV battery currently has little resale or scrap value on its own: the cost of shipping, handling, and storing these large packs outweighs what recyclers will pay for a single unit. To cover the work involved, we charge a flat $400 handling fee on every job, which covers the forklift work, receiving, installation handling, and the storage and disposal of the old battery.
Not at this time. We don’t open packs to repair or replace individual internal components — cells, modules, or internal electronics. The equipment and facility requirements, the cost of the work, and the uncertain long-term reliability of that kind of repair don’t currently make sense for our customers versus replacing the pack with a tested unit.
